Microneedling: 4 Things You Need to Know

What Is Microneedling
Microneedling, an advanced clinical procedure, uses a handheld device such as Skin Pen for creating micro-perforations on the skin. These controlled micro-injuries trigger our body’s healing response, which increases blood flow, releases growth factors and leads to collagen remodeling or firmer skin. A series of 3 to 6 treatments is recommended for best results. Collagen production occurs gradually, so it’s important to have a few treatments. A microneedling treatment can improve the overall tone of skin and reduce fine lines, wrinkles and acne.
Expectations During Treatment
A topical anesthetic will be applied prior to the treatment to reduce discomfort. The procedure should last between 30-45 minutes. Patients have reported feeling the device vibrate. Most patients report feeling more discomfort and sensation around the areas of thin skin or bony structures, such as the nose and forehead.
The skin will turn pink or red immediately after the treatment, much like a sunburn. The most common responses to treatment were also dryness, roughness, tightness and redness. Other reactions included itching, burning, discomfort, tenderness and pain. Most patients will see a resolution of these symptoms within 3 to 5 business days.
Collagen gradually rebuilds after microneedling. The process can take between 3 and 6 months. You can enhance the treatment outcome by combining other treatments like PRP and chemical peels, or having a series from 3 to 6 sessions. You should also be using a proactive skincare routine that contains growth factor, as well as peptides and hyaluronic acids.
Maximizing Result
Chemical peels can be a great addition to microneedling, especially if you’re treating acne, sun damage, or hyperpigmentation. Peels allow deeper skin layers to be reached during treatment.
You can safely repeat microneedling every 4-6 weeks until you get the desired results. We recommend 3 treatments for collagen induction. However, there should be a minimum of 4 to 6-weeks between treatments. In order to reduce scars, 3 to 6 treatments are recommended.
Care For Your Skin When Microneedling
You should not apply anything to your face for 12-24 hours following treatment, unless your provider has specifically advised you. Use a mild cleanser, moisturizing lotion, and sunscreen for 48 hours following your treatment, or as directed by your provider. Oxygenetix is a foundation that can be worn post-procedure. It helps to heal the skin and breathe. The foundation is made with an aloe-based base, and can be used for all skin tones. After microneedling, it is normal to see the skin peel within a couple of days. The old skin starts peeling away as a new layer is formed. Peeling is minimal and similar to mild sunburn. The peeling will disappear within a couple of days, leaving you with a youthful glow.
