Facts about tungsten

Tungsten is a term from Sweden and this term means “heavy stone”. The chemical symbol of tungsten is “W” coming from its earlier name of wolfram which comes from a mineral called wolframite where it was discovered. Wolframite means “the devourer of tin” since this mineral interferes with tin smelting. Tungsten has one of the top melting points of any metal – being over 6 thousand degrees. It is rated on the Mohs scale of a 9 for hardness. The hardest element in the world is diamond and is rated 10. Tungsten carbide is two to three times harder than titanium or cobalt chrome. Wedding bands made of tungsten carbide have now become the leading metal for wedding bands in the United States today.
